LOCALLY

Locally, proceeds from the sales of donated items go directly to Disabled American Veterans Chapters 20 and 53 (see www.daviowa.org) to assist veterans in the Des Moines area and to support the programs of the Disabled American Veterans throughout the State of Iowa. Some of these programs specifically include:

We supply toiletries, such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and shaving articles, as well as phone cards and other necessary items, when veterans unexpectedly require hospitalization. Plus, we occasionally purchase much needed hospital equipment for the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.

We provide funds for annual scholarships to veterans and/or their dependents, and we buy U.S. Bonds for an annual students’ essay contest. Clothing items are also provided to veterans when such is recommended management or by our DAV office in the Federal Building in downtown Des Moines.

Transportation of veterans from their homes throughout Central Iowa to the Des Moines VA Hospital and back home. To do this, we pay the salaries of three Hospital Service Coordinators (HSCs) to make the necessary arrangements for transportation of these veterans.

We fund in-hospital activities, including picnics, parties and other services through VA Volunteer Services.

From time to time, we provide TVs, coffee, snacks, pens, paper, envelopes, stamps and reading and writing material for hospital lounges and waiting rooms.

Your support of the DAV Thrift Store in Des Moines helps us provide all these services, resources and more to Central Iowa’s veterans. Conveniently, your donations are accepted at either our store or through an at-home pick-up.
